Networking Gone Wrong
Networking Mistake 2 - Saying That Gender Inequality is Rubbish
All the stories in this blog are based on real events and yesterday we had quite a day.
- 'There is no such thing as gender inequality', he said
- 'Men used to be able to beat their wives, now they can't, and women take their houses',
- 'If anything, women oppress themselves'.
Sigh.
What do we do when faced with such language?
Social distancing comes to mind.
Also a couple of stats about gender inequality:
Only 6.6% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women.
Only 24,3% of all national parliamentarians are women.
9 out of 10 people found to be biased against women
and finally, 1 in 3 women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence.
Men can also be victims of gender inequality as they feel pressure to behave a certain way and suffer in silence. Inequality hurts everyone.
Yes, there has been a lot of progress in the gender equality movement but please, let's stop going around saying that it's not a problem. Particularly if you want to make a good impression at networking!
For clarity, saying things like racism or homophobia don't really exist anymore can be added to the list. Just because you haven't experienced discrimination, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
